In the UK barrier provision is behind most of the EU. The design of appropriate acoustic and visually appropriate barriers is a complex issue which requires the input of civil engineers, structural engineers, acoustic engineers and landscape architects. Too often the aesthetic aspects of the design of environmental noise barriers falls way short of contemporary environmental sensibilities and potentials. It is imperative that environmental noise barriers be designed relative to each specific location and thus they need not be eyesores in the landscape. The use of vegetative, absorptive, 'hi-tec' and transparent options offer ways to integrate these often large scale elements into the landscape as well as urban areas.

Benz Kotzen Sustainable Landscape Arch. has been at the forefront of barrier research and has co-authored the authoritive book on the subject with Colin English. The authors are presently working on the 2nd Edition. (Benz Kotzen and Colin English, April 1999, 'Environmental Noise Barriers - A guide to their acoustic and visual design', E and FN Spon, London. ISBN 0-419-23180-3).
